All, I know nothing about towing! I have a 2003 Ford F-150 2wd, ext cab 4.2 v6. I am looking to get a 5x8 or up to a 6x10 enclosed trailers for hauling dirt bikes and gear around. (4 bikes) Can any of you give me any pointers as to trailer hitch, trailers sizes, used vs. new trailers..... etc.
Make sure to get a V nose to help cut the wind with a V6. Trailer hitch should be a std class 5 frame mounted hitch. Dont know what size I would think a 5X8 would be tight.
i have a 99 ford with the 6. i wouldnt tow anything but a atv/lawnmower on a small open trailer with it.
I agree with all the above. I would probably also go with the larger trailer myself. It is very nice to be able to get all your gear and bikes in the trailer and have room to work. (strapping down bikes, ect.) Or maybe have room for an additonal bike if needed. This also leaves more room in the cab of the truck. I have a 2500 HD with a duramax, so I am unfamiliar with the capabilities of your truck. But I would consider stopping power and stability along with being able to get the whole rig up and rolling. If possible, I would see if a dealer would let you pull both trailer sizes to see what you, and your truck like better. Youll have to figure in the weight of the bikes and gear, but maybe pulling a few different trailers will help you make a decision...you could even pull a few different brands of trailers to see what you like. As for the used vs new debate, youll just have to shop and see whats out there and compare. Hope this helps point you in the right direction. Good luck :TU:
stopping power and stability should be fine with..........but trying to climb hills are gonna over work it pretty easy.
