Its probably obvious, since I have been chasing parts for a few weeks, now, Ole #302 is getting some much needed love. I took my GSX to the Reunion in Morgantown PA. last summer. When I got there I opened the trailer doors, and had brake fluid....everywhere. Needless to say, it never left the trailer. Both rear wheel cylinders, left front caliper, and master cylinder, all leaking....as well as Trans seals, rear seals, rear main, and timing cover.....fuel tank too. All original components. Now I have it off the chassis and doing a mechanical restoration. I had no intention of doing this, as I wanted to keep it a survivor, but it just wasn't something I wanted to just patch up. I am reinstalling every original clip, bolt, and fastener in its original location, where possible. Some progress photos to follow...
Had my Master cylinder, wheel cylinders, booster and other components replated and rebuilt by White Post Restorations. They look great! All are original components! []
I tend to do that every time I do a timing chain swap...lol Looks good Being a survivor is one thing, but a safe driving survivor is much better..
I have to ask.. Why do you think that just about every possible piece that held fluid leaked all at once? At least now you will have everything new..
I knew it had all the age related issues and leaks, and was going to address each, one at a time. One thing leads to another and I wanted this car to be safe and reliable.
I like that you're doing this and also retaining the OEM stuff. In my opinion - which probably isn't worth much - you'll still be able to call it a "survivor", having utilized original parts. Think of it as a "preservation". That said: do you have any plans to clean up the frame during this while I'm at it moment? Fresh body mounts wouldn't be a terrible idea...
Yes, I am cleaning the grime and all components for refinishing. Also cleaning the bottom of the body, and going to apply a fresh coat of paint, new ball joints, new bushings, etc....
Isn't it funny how things snowball so quickly? You will not regret all of your efforts. You are sure making some fast progress and it's looking great. I would love to do the same thing to my unrestored GSX so this is inspiring. I'm not sure if you are concerned about complete originality or not but the T-stat housing was originally painted red with the engine and the upper alternator adjustment arm was gray-phosphate. Easy to change at this point, not easy later if you change your mind.
Yes, just not painted yet. I have to install the oil pan and paint it so the T-Housing will be done the same time. Alternator bracket is no problem.
Thank you for the reminder. This the 36th restoration project I have worked on, including the Concours Gold Silver Mist car in my Avatar.
