I was talking with Ken (Techg8) and couldn't figure out how to attach pictures in chat. So I will ask the question here. Will this carb that ken built for me, years ago, work for my 67 430 motor with a stock manifold? Pictures are provided and please let me know if anything else needs to be provided. Thanks Scott
Sure, with a big enough hammer and fat enough wallet, anything will fit... (the real issue is if the jetting, idle circuit, and other variables can be adjusted to work correctly for the engine/build, then, "yes", it will work. Otherwise, you will be hating it and providing more "Q-jets are crap" mis-information to the scene. In, other words, people doing wrong things with wrongs stuff on wrong equipment, equal the negative information that fills "history", Don't be that person... Research, learn, understand, and pay that forward.
I had this problem, putting a 800 cfm Qjet on a stock 69 400 manifold. Found the correct gasket, think is was a Pontiac, but the gasket extended out over the front of the manifold flat area, so had vac leak. Ended up using a 1/8 inch alu plate with a regular gasket under and the Pontiac gasket on top and solve my leak problem.
The direct answer is no. So the question becomes does one match the gasket to the manifold year or the carb year?
I matched the gasket to the carb. Someone replied on my thread about this problem that Mr Gasket makes a spacer kit, I did not look into this because I had a alu plate.
The "U" channel is the deal breaker for using the later Q-jets on some early intake manifolds, especially those that used thin steel gaskets to seal off the exhaust "channel" under the carb. In some cases you have to make a thin steel shim type gasket that extends out far enough to effectively seal off the "U" channel, then good to go at that point. About all the installer has to do is to check the fit between the gaskets being used and the carb you are going to install and make sure things are sealed off. If not, take steps to do so. Not really any more complicated than that......
